Court Reports / Risk Assessments

Court Reports - what are they?

When an individual is charged with an offence, their lawyer may request a Pre-sentence Report    . Pre-Sentence Reports are psychological assessments that aim to better understand the influencing factors that contributed to the offending behaviour; and are often recommended when there are thought to be mitigating factors that may result in a reduced sentence. They are impartial psychological evaluations used to assist the courts in making informed sentencing decisions.

Risk Assessments - what are they?

Risk Assessment may be requested for a number of reasons such as for Child Safety; for Family Court Matters; Weapons Licensing; Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal; or for a Parole application. A standard risk assessment involves a comprehensive interview and the use of psychometric instruments that evaluate the various aspects of an individuals functioning (i.e., mental health, personality, level of risk of harmful behaviour). The information obtained is used to formulate the presenting concerns, provide clarification and opine any potential for further harmful behaviour.
